The Rocket Summer

THE ROCKET SUMMER-TIME…
By: Bryce Avary aka The Rocket Summer

Every so often we’re lucky enough at Smash to get an artist whose not only down to be interviewed, but do the story themselves.  What better way for you the reader to find things out from an artist than in their own words?  So here it is, Summer thoughts and going’s on from the Rocket Summer himself.  Ladies and Gentlemen, Bryce Avary. -homie

On the name…
I put out my first cd when I was 16 in 99.   I was going to naturally have the project just be called "Bryce Avary", but my friend told me I should name it.  I really liked the idea of naming so it wouldnt be so centered around me but feel more like a "thing" that people
could feel a part of, So when my friend was suggesting calling a name he was reading a book and in one of the chapters the phrase "Rocket Summer" was used and I thought that was cool, So I decided to name it The Rocket Summer.  The book is called The Martian Chronicles and it was written by Ray Bradbury.  Naming this was a really casual decision, luckily I still love the name!  But as far as it relating to Summer it self, I guess its more just a name?

On Summer…
When I was a kid there was a 50 cent movie theater near my house so
my brother and I would go there almost every day and watch movies.
It's really hot in texas during the summer so it was nice to relax indoors and watch 50 cent movies and drink cokes and stuff.

On the new record…

Working on this new album has been my best experience yet.  I feel its definitely my best and couldn't be more thankful.  I'm really proud of the lyrics and the music and I can't wait for people to hear it.  I really cant wait for us to start playing these songs live.  The album is titled "Do You Feel" and is coming out on July 17 on Island, so this summer we are going to do some headlining shows around release date and then will be joining the warped tour for about a month.  The band and I are really looking forward to it.  It will be a different experience because we've never done warped tour and are used to shows at night in clubs, so It will be cool playing every day during the daytime.  I hear warped is like punk rock summer camp.  I'm looking forward to watching all the bands and just feeling the energy that the fest has to offer everyday.   So it should be a good time!  Showering will be…interesting?
