We Are The Fury

Rock and Roll Gets Fury-ous
By: Travis Naegle

Boasting a big rock sound and an undeniable penchant for hooks and sing-alongs, Ohio’s We Are The Fury are sure to be the next big thing amongst hipsters and MTV viewers alike. The band’s new record, Venus, is slated for a May 22nd release, and there’s something about it that screams ‘instant classic’. If it’s rock you’re searching for, then look no further. We Are The Fury are gonna blow your mind.
“We’re from Toledo, Ohio, but I think it’s safe to say that Toledo is not the place for us”, says front man Jeremy Lublin laughingly. “The scene back home is mostly nu-metal and screamo, so we are kind of the ugly duckling”. That might be true back home, but We Are The Fury fit in quite nicely amongst the few bands that are bringing the old-school rock sound back. The new record is full of subtle nods to Kiss, Queen and Billy Joel (amongst other rock and roll greats), but the band definitely have created a new sound they can call their own; an remarkable brand of rock and roll and theatrical energy that gets better with every listen. “We wanted to make a big pop/rock record, something that people can listen to and not be bored with”, says Lublin. “We took a lot of time to write the best songs that we could, and we’re really proud of every last one of them”. Venus is more focused, and dare I say, better than the bands 2006 debut EP, Infinite Jest. The band, including Lublin, brother Stephen on drums, guitarist Chris Hatfield, bassist Alan Hoffar, and pianist Todd Wehrle, may have created what could be called the perfect album. Mid tempo jams like “Now You Know” and “Camera Tricks” give the record it’s edge, while the ballads “Close Your Eyes” and “Don’t Need A Thing” give you a little room to breathe. “Hey Love”, the album’s centerpiece, covers plenty of ground with its dynamic and bouncy rhythms. “I think people are either going to love it or hate it. So far the responses have been pretty positive, but I really just want people to respect the songs and where we’re coming from”. Venus is full of surprises; the band’s energy shines through on every track, and the guest vocals by Daryl Palumbo (Glassjaw, Head Automatica) are a treat. Not only did Palumbo sing on the record, he also takes credit in co-producing the effort. “Daryl is a mentor and positive source of inspiration to the band. We’re fans of each others’ music and we share a mutual respect for one another in the studio”, says Lublin. Not a bad idea to be associated with one of the most unique and respected voices in today’s rock music.
The band has been on tour for a few weeks, promoting the upcoming release of Venus and sharing the new music to thousands of fans new and old. “I get restless when I’m in one place for too long”, Lublin adds. “Being on tour and performing every night and having fun with your friends is exactly what I needed after being home for a couple of weeks, so I think we’re all in good spirits”. After their current tour ends, We Are The Fury will be hitting the festival circuit, including a slot on this year’s Bamboozle festival and a string of dates on the Vans Warped Tour to round out the summer. “I can’t wait to do the Warped Tour. We’ll get to play the new music for a ton of people everyday and hang out with some pretty amazing bands. It’s gonna be a good thing for us”.
Lublin talks of the new record with a sense of pride and anticipation, like a child who knows a secret but won’t spill just yet. He seems somewhat prepared for naysayers and skeptics, adding “Come see us live. If you don’t get the record, you’ll get it live”. It’s an open challenge to new listeners, a double-dare, if you will. You can’t back down from a double-dare. Check out the tracks at myspace.com/wearethefury to hear what the band has in store with Venus.
