Am Focus
Interview and photos by Hektor D. Esparza

Matt Borowski A.K.A “Balz”
Age 21
Residence Southeast Las Vegas

FACTOID: Because of a surgery that removed part of Matt’s intestine he can eat at least four times what a normal man can eat. And he often does.

How long you been skating?
MB- About nine years. I started when I was twelve or thirteen.

Who are your sponsors?
MB- Abstract Skateboards

What’s your setup?
MB- Abstract deck, Crux trucks and blank soft wheels, you know, for the parks.

Where/what have you been skating lately?
MB- I’ve been skating the Green valley 9 stair and the Americana 5 stair. I got a backside big spin over the Americana 5. It took me four boards to do it.

Just a big spin, no flip?
MB- Backside big spin is harder than frontside, especially over a long set of stairs.

My old friend Brian Lotti invented and named that trick like 13 years ago.
MB- Really, that’s awesome.

Are you scared of pools?
MB- NO

Have you ever dropped in on one?
MB- Yep. But there is so much more I’d like to learn.

How long have you been a sponsored am?
MB- Seven years.

What do you think you need to accomplish before turning pro.
MB- As far as I’m concerned, I already am pro. I just do whatever I feel like doing. It’s not like I’m trying to learn specific tricks that would make me pro.

What makes a good pro skateboarder?
MB- A good pro is someone who has a good attitude and can do whatever they want on a skateboard.

When you get your first pro model will you still film some of your video parts in Vegas?
MB- I don’t think going pro should mean I have to leave.

What do you think of pros whom say they can’t wait to retire?
MB- If they want to waste their talent and fire for skateboarding then let ‘em. I am going to skate till I can’t walk and maybe even after.

Who are some good pros right now?
MB- Marc Johnson, Paul Rodriguez, there are just so many…

What about old school guys?
MB- Mark Gonzalez.

What old school tricks are you into?
MB- Pretty much all the no-complies.

Do you like to play SKATE?
MB- Yeah it’s fun.

Have you ever played ad-a-flat?
MB- No, what is that?

It’s when you do a flatland trick, and then your bro has to do it and another one. And then you have to do the first two tricks, plus one and so on.
MB- Sounds like fun.

How many boards can you ollie?
MB- Seven

Can you do a judo air or a Christ air?
MB- I’ve never tried. You’ll have to show me.

OK. Thanks Matt. Is there anything else you want to say?
MB- I want to give a shout-out to the Winchester crew, my Abstract teammates and all the Vegas skaters. Peace.
