AN INSIGHT INTO THE KID, THE TEDDY BEAR, AND THE GUN

We are Kid Deposit Triumph – also known as KDT. We are an “up-and-coming” band from the Las Vegas Valley. Our huge street signs tell the kids where we are playing. However, it's the aggressive, yet harmonious, music that keeps them coming back.

We have only been together six months, but our members have been active in the scene for over three years. After the wreckage of two local bands - Sad Machine and Sorry About Tomorrow - KDT formed in late 2003 to raise the bar for the local music scene. Our three-song EP, which was just released at the "Peeing in Our Own Backyard" show at The Huntridge, sold out. Incidentally, our EP was good enough to get us a spot on the Vans Warped tour Vegas stop.

We also seem to be part of a dying breed of working bands. Only a select few local bands actually get out and promote their shows. We not only make use of fliers and 10-foot signs; also, we make use of message boards, music sites, and radio ads when promoting our shows. "Most bands in Vegas are either too financially unprepared or just don't know that: in order to make it in this business, a band has to work - especially in this business. With this style of music, we have to work 10 times harder," said Mike OttO, lead singer.

So, everyone wants to know WTF is up with our name: Kid Deposit Triumph. According to OttO, “The phrase ‘Kid Deposit Triumph’ stems from a short story I wrote in middle school about troubled youth in America. The whole phrase is a comparative statement between the necessity for financial gain within our society, and the need to make personal triumph and spirituality a necessity as well. It means to, essentially, attempt to effectively make the youth a financial equal, along with their education and upbringing a necessity as well.”

The music we play is meant to push us as a band. In doing so, we try to find a better understanding of music. Our band’s main objective is to convey ideas and feelings. It just so happens that the medium for this expression is aggressive music.

By using intricate guitar work, and bipolar vocals, we hope to keep our listeners guessing. At the same time, we strive to maintain melodic integrity. For example, our song "I don't mean to impose but I am the ocean" is an outcry for spirituality. It is relevant to all beliefs. The following lyric conveys this idea: "Our love consumed by the masses.” This lyric projects the notion that losing hope is the saddest thing someone can do.

Of course, the music - in itself - is our drive. In actuality, it's about having FUN, meeting new people, experiencing new places, making an impression, and effecting people for the better. We're a positive band. We want our fans, our peers, and our families to enjoy this experience as much as we enjoy it. The music has to be fun and stimulating, not boring.

Any local music scene should be a nurturing ground for musicians. Las Vegas is a killing field. Short of a few local crusaders, bands trying to define a style, experiment, or just trying to get their foot in the door, are not only criticized, but crucified. Organizations like: YLS, Pee, Homegrown, Shoestring, and Smash, along with a few venues such as: The Huntridge and the Cheyenne Saloon, seem to be the only resources available to help bands to a greater extent. As far as KDT is concerned, we will give respect to any band, organization, individual or listener who will give a local band a "fighting" chance. You would be surprised at what you can find from a bunch of kids who have bad equipment, no money, and a good idea.

With the combination of ideas that are new and old, Kid Deposit Triumph feels that it is not about having the catchiest songs or the best musicians. Using ideas and emotions to fuel innovative ways of blending chaos and beauty: this is Kid Deposit Triumph.
