Interview with A
Wilhelm Scream at The Roadhouse on 12/7/04 with Nuno
Pereira
by: Joanne Vitale
You have probably heard A Wilhelm
Scream before, you just might not know it yet. Whether
you have heard the sound that has been used in movies
since 1951 or maybe you have listened to their latest
release Mute Print. Either way, I'm sure you weren't
disappointed. Singer, Nuno Pereira, sat down with
me and gave us the scoop on what they'll be up to
in the new year.
Smash: What would you say about all the kids that
say, that once you go mainstream and get on MTV, FUSE,
radio, or start playing stadiums you sell out?
Nuno: It's like that Lagwagon song, bands are cool
until they make enough money to afford a house and
pay the bills. Then all of a sudden you're a sell
out. We do this for the music, but it's impossible
to do it as long as some bands have been around and
not gained much interest. The radio and MTV and sad
part of music right now, but the idea is the idea
and it still works so that's great.
What are you plans for the next few months?
After this tour we're going home for Christmas. Then
we go out with Rise Against and The Explosion, and
Most Precious Blood on the east coast. We are going
to be finishing up writing some songs and go record
our new album.
What advice would you give to bands that are just
starting out?
Buy a van and go tour! Honestly, if your band breaks
up after two or three years, at least you got to see
many amazing things.
How did you guys hook up with Nitro Records?
Our A&R guy, Jon, came up to us at one of the
Warped Tour dates in 2002 and we just kept in touch.
We released our album Benefits of Thinking Out Loud
on Jumpstart Records. Once we had it recorded we showed
it to Nitro and they were like "hell yeah."
Quote me on that, I'm pretty sure they said "hell
yeah."
Speaking of Warped Tour, you guys were on it this
past summer. What bands were you checking out?
Yeah, we did a couple weeks on the Smartpunk stage
in the Midwest. We were really into Rise Against,
Underoath, Flogging Molly and Bad Religion. For the
first few days I missed Bad Religion because I was
caught up watching other bands. You can just walk
around all day and just watch different bands.
What's in your CD player or I-pod now?
Lots and lots of I-pods going on. A lot of Against
Me, Alkaline Trio, Iron Maiden and Metallica. I listen
to a lot of old, cheesy metal. The new Rise Against
record is always on.
