Fill Your Belly With Nostalgic Green Jellÿ

Written By: Melina Robinson

It was 1993 and MTV was still relevant. I found myself watching Riki Rachtman host Headbangers Ball with the menagerie of curious and a-typical videos that appeared during that program. I was a wide-eared 11-year-old, obsessed with bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains (hey, I am from Seattle) looking for the latest metal flavor to wet the whistle of my growing mind.

Baaa baaa baaa ba ba ba ba ba … “Well, the first little piggy, well, he was kinda hick.

He spent most of his days just a dreamin’ of the city.” This was my introduction to “The Three Little Pigs,” Green Jellÿ (aka Green Jellö), and what I fancied as some really wicked claymation. Needless to say, my young mind bent and I went to the nearest Sam Goody and picked up the album Cereal Killer.

For those of you who don’t remember (or possibly weren’t even born), the song was a re-telling of the classic fairy tale The Three Little Pigs with its own modern twist. Green Jellö originally released the song in 1992 under Zoo Entertainment. Sadly, due to a perceived trademark infringement by the brand Jell-O, the band changed its name to Green Jellÿ and re-released the single on May 24, 1993.

While this name change was a hiccup for the band, there were no tears to be shed or pigs to be eaten as the song peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In closing, per a quote from the video, “and the moral of the story is that bands with no talent can easily amuse idiots with a stupid puppet show …” Dare I say, Green Jellÿ certainly blew our house in.

I can’t say I remember much about Green Jellÿ past that brief period, but they have certainly been a lesser-known mainstay since their inception in 1981. Green Jellÿ has continued to release a slew of EPs, video albums, and singles, with their 2021 studio album release Garbage Band Kids, featuring guest musical performances by members of Trailer Park Boys, Suicidal Tendencies, Fishbone, and The Dwarves (just to name a few).

Green Jellÿ’s also had numerous lineup changes over the years, with Bill Manspeaker as the mainstay vocalist since 1981. One notable member was backing vocalist and guitarist, Maynard James Keenan, from the little-known band Tool (I kid) spanning over 1990 – 1993.

If curiosity killed the cat, or the wolf in this case, this outrageous and satirical band will be visiting a stage near you. Smash Magazine so candidly presents Green Jellÿ at Jackpot Bar & Grill on Friday Mar 24, 2023, with doors at 7 pm and showtime at 8 pm. Tickets start at $20 and can be purchased on SmashMagazine.com.

Still Alive: Scream Keeps it Fresh

By Lauryn Dyan

The horror genre is notorious for producing sequels and reboots that regurgitate, water down, or even undermine the formula that made their debut film so gripping. Just take a look at some of the major horror franchises on Rotten Tomatoes and watch the critic and audience scores yo-yo from release to release, most often at lower percentages than the first installment, and almost always with at least one score so low they ought to add a category below Rotten. Yet the Scream franchise has somehow managed to break this horrific cycle, with only one film receiving a score under the 60% Fresh threshold for critic reviews (Scream 3 at 41%).

How has a franchise that’s spanned nearly three decades stayed reliable in an unreliable genre? Cast, crew, writing, location? Blood sacrifice?

Perhaps it’s that the Scream franchise is hyperaware of its genre and formula and knows exactly when to lean in or break out of it. The most meta of all horror, Scream is able to make you laugh while also laughing at itself. It’s an endearing quality in a genre that’s meant to make you uneasy not warm and fuzzy. I have yet to watch a Scream that doesn’t bring a smile to my face at least once, always balancing horror with humor, albeit at various ratios.

Scream VI, the latest installment, is no exception. While the violence outweighs the humor this time around with ghostface zealously slashing through New York City, this sixth film earned the biggest box office opening weekend debut of the franchise and is doing well with audiences and critics alike. Scream VI is a self-proclaimed ‘sequel requel’ that proves that horror doesn’t have to degrade over time. Truly, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have assembled a cast and a script with some twists that keep Wes Craven’s legacy intact and lays a blueprint for other horror series to follow.

To be fair, even if the film had been a rotting mess, the movie’s marketing would have been strong enough to help with initial ticket sales. In addition to traditional advertising, experiential tactics were used to build excitement. Most notable: the major city ghostface sightings that freaked people out so much they called the cops. I’m sure it was either a relief or a disappointment to the police when they arrived on the scene and discovered ghostface was just an actor hired to lurk on the street in the iconic black robe, hood, and white mask.

Also, the Scream social media content featuring Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park), whose song “In My Head” with Kailee Morgue plays over the title screen, and Demi Lovato, whose new song “Still Alive” closes the slasher flick, didn’t hurt buzz either.

Whatever you attribute it to, Scream VI is a Certified FreshTM success with box office numbers that all but ensure a seventh film. Similar to the lyrics of Lovato’s single, this series isn’t just limping by–it is still very much alive. Horror directors take note.

Cursive’s The Ugly Organ Turns 20

It’s been 20 years and no one’s written a more vicious review of The Ugly Organ than Tim Kasher himself. The Cursive frontman repeatedly likens his creative process to taking a shit; at other points, it’s more like masturbation. Either way, on “Butcher The Song” the end result is described as a “horrible mess.” This is right before Kasher brings The Ugly Organ to its brutal and bloody….
